Do you want to know who you were in a past life? How this influences you today? And what’s the purpose of your soul’s incarnation?

Your birth chart is your 100% personalized blueprint for your soul’s evolution. It describes not only who you are, your psychological patterns and your personality – but, looking at it through the lens of evolutionary astrology, it reveals where you are coming from, why exactly you got that specific chart and how you should evolve in the current lifetime.

Your soul has already lived through countless incarnations and has been learning and evolving through these experiences. For each incarnation in a human body, your soul has chosen the exact day, time, place and family for you to have the experiences you need, to learn the lessons your soul desires to learn. Once you understand this, it makes sense that your entire birth chart is karmic. Your present personality and circumstances come from past lives, and your birth chart therefore reflects your karma.

Now that's a lot of karmic information to look at - but the South Node and North Node of the Moon in your birth chart are excellent starting points for unraveling your soul's journey through this life and the purpose of your incarnation. In this article we’re going to explore the meaning of the South Node and North Node in Astrology and how the Moon's Nodes in your birth chart reveal your soul's past experiences and future destiny.

What are the Moon's Nodes?

The Moon's Nodes are two significant points in your astrological chart that tell the story of your soul's journey across lifetimes. While they're not physical planets, they're so called shadow planets - mathematical points calculated from the Moon's orbit around Earth. To understand this, consider that while Earth orbits the Sun, from our earthly perspective, it appears as though the Sun moves around us – this is the view we see in birth charts. The Moon's orbital path intersects with this apparent solar path at two points, creating what we call the South Node and North Node.

These Nodes always sit exactly opposite each other in your chart, forming what astrologers call the Nodal Axis. Think of this axis as a cosmic compass, with the South Node representing where you've been – your inherent gifts, habits, and patterns from past lives or early childhood – and the North Node pointing to where you're headed – the qualities and experiences your soul yearns to develop in this lifetime.

In your birth chart, you'll find these Nodes in opposing zodiac signs and houses. For instance, a North Node in Aries in the 1st house automatically means a South Node in Libra in the 7th house. This opposition creates a dynamic relationship between your comfort zone and your growth edge, telling a profound story about your soul's evolutionary journey.

What is the South Node in astrology?

In evolutionary astrology, the South Node acts as a portal to your past lives and karmic inheritance. This powerful point holds the key to understanding the accumulated experiences, unresolved issues, emotional memories, relationship dynamics, and behavioral patterns your soul has carried forward through many incarnations. While there is more karma than indicated by the South Node, the South Node represents what renowned astrologer Steven Forrest calls "ripened karma," referring to the specific karmic lessons that are ready to be addressed in this lifetime, while other karmic patterns remain dormant until future incarnations. Through countless repetitions across lifetimes, these patterns have become your comfort zone – qualities, skills, and behaviors that feel as natural as breathing but are preventing further growth.

These familiar patterns of the South Node often manifest in the present life as self-sabotaging behaviors, relationship dynamics that keep you stuck, or life situations that mysteriously repeat despite your best efforts to change them. Like a record playing the same track over and over, these patterns keep you trapped in familiar but limiting territory. For instance, a South Node in Capricorn might make you exceptionally skilled at maintaining structure and discipline, but this can manifest as rigid perfectionism and fear of vulnerability that prevents deeper emotional connections and growth.

When you operate from your South Node, you're like a master pianist playing their favorite piece – confident, comfortable, and completely in your element. Yet this very mastery often becomes a trap, like a virtuoso who only plays one piece to perfection but never learns new music. Just as this limits the pianist's artistic growth, your South Node mastery can keep you locked in outdated patterns that no longer serve your evolution. These mostly unconscious limitations, emotional memories and unresolved wounds become like familiar melodies that actively block your soul's current mission, preventing you from exploring new compositions in your life's symphony. Like a master pianist you also carry on talents from your past life, but when we analyze at the South Node in evolutionary astrology, we choose to look at it with a negative bias, as it represents something you did not get right in the past.

To truly understand your karmic heritage, it's important to know that the South Node isn't just a single point in your chart – it's part of a larger narrative. Its story involves other planetary bodies: planets conjunct the South Node, its planetary ruler, and various aspects it forms with other points in your chart. Each of these elements adds another layer to understanding your soul's journey and the nature of your karmic patterns.

The true art of working with your South Node lies in finding balance. While these patterns can feel like obstacles, they also contain valuable wisdom and capabilities you've mastered over many lifetimes. The goal isn't to completely abandon your South Node qualities, but rather to use them as a foundation for growth. By approaching your South Node with awareness and curiosity, you can honor these inherent strengths while consciously choosing to break free from their limiting aspects. This transformation turns what once were barriers into stepping stones on your evolutionary path.

It is important to understand the past because it explains the here and now, why this kind of life, and for what reason. It explains everything from the point of view of evolutionary necessity and karmic causes. Why this parent, this lover, this experience, why these conditions in my life, and so forth. - Jeffrey Wolf Green

What is the North Node in astrology?

Directly opposite your South Node lies the North Node – a powerful point of destiny that acts as a cosmic compass pointing toward your soul's highest potential. More than just a direction for growth, the North Node serves as a remedy, offering solutions to the dilemmas and limitations presented by your South Node. It represents qualities, experiences, and life lessons your soul yearns to embrace in this lifetime, even if they feel foreign or challenging at first.

Think of the North Node as an invitation to explore uncharted territory in your life's journey. Like a traveler in a new land, you might feel awkward, confused, or even shy when first stepping into these energies. For instance, if your South Node rests in Capricorn, your North Node in Cancer beckons you to balance your ingrained self-reliance and ambition with something entirely different – the vulnerable arts of emotional expression, nurturing, and intuitive wisdom.

The beauty of the North Node lies in its role as the universe's gentle suggestion for your evolution. While it might feel uncomfortable initially, it holds the key to resolving your soul's oldest patterns and challenges. However, like any profound transformation, embodying your North Node qualities doesn't happen automatically – it requires conscious effort, courage, and intention.

When you begin to work with your North Node energy, you're like an adult learning a new language or instrument. There's a certain clumsiness to it, a vulnerability in being a beginner. You're developing new skills, perspectives, and ways of relating that might feel strange or even threatening to your established sense of self. Yet it's precisely this willingness to be uncomfortable that opens the door to profound growth and transformation.

Just as the South Node tells a complex story involving various astrological factors, your North Node is part of a larger cosmic puzzle. Its placement, aspects, and planetary ruler all contribute to understanding how to best approach this path of growth. These additional elements can provide valuable insights into the specific ways your soul is seeking to evolve in this lifetime.

The journey toward your North Node is not about abandoning your South Node strengths but rather about expanding beyond them. It's a lifelong process of learning, healing and self-discovery that requires patience and self-compassion and is not meant to be completed by 40. Each step forward, no matter how small, is progress on your soul's evolutionary path. Trust that every moment of awkwardness or uncertainty is actually a sign of growth and the discomfort you feel is simply the sensation of your spirit expanding beyond its familiar boundaries.

How to find your north and south node

The first step to unravel the meaning of your nodes is knowing your nodal placement. Here's how to find it:
   1. Use our birth chart calculator.
   2. Enter your birth information:
       ◦ Date of birth
       ◦ Exact time of birth (this is crucial for accurate house placements)
       ◦ Place of birth (city and country)
   3. Enter this information into the calculator.
   4. Look for the horseshoe-like symbols on your chart ☋ ☊.
   5. Identify which house the North Node is in ☊. The South Node is not indicated in every chart calculator – but it’s always directly opposite your North Node. So if your North Node is in the 7th house, your South Node will be in the 1st house.

Remember, an accurate birth time is essential for precise house placements. If your nodes are close to a house cusp, a difference of a few minutes can shift them to the adjacent house.

FAQ about the Lunar Nodes

What is the difference between the moon nodes sign and house?

The sign of your nodes describes the qualities and energies you're working with (like Aries determination or Libran diplomacy), while the house placement shows the life areas where these lessons will primarily play out (such as relationships in the 7th house or career and reputation in the 10th house).

Do my lunar Nodes change signs?

Your natal Nodes remain in the same signs throughout your lifetime. However, the transiting Nodes change signs every 18 months and their aspects to your natal chart can activate key growth periods or turning points along your journey.

What does a conjunction to my South Node mean?

Planets conjunct your South Node intensify past life patterns and karmic imprints. These planets represent specific energies, talents, and challenges you've mastered in previous lifetimes, but they may also indicate areas where you're overly attached to familiar patterns. The nature of the conjunct planets reveals both your inherent gifts and the specific ways you might stay stuck in comfortable but limiting behaviors.

What does a conjunction to my North Node mean?

Planets conjunct your North Node act as powerful guides toward your soul's evolution. They represent energies and qualities you're meant to develop in this lifetime, offering specific tools and pathways for growth. While these planetary energies might feel challenging to express at first, they hold the key to your spiritual development and indicate areas of life where taking risks will lead to significant breakthroughs.

Do the Moon Nodes have to be interpreted together?

Yes, the Nodes must be interpreted as a unified axis rather than separate points. Since they always oppose each other, they create a dynamic story of your evolution – where you've been (South Node) and where you're heading (North Node). Understanding this polarity is key to working effectively with your Nodes.
How can I start working with my Lunar Nodes? To engage your Nodes, start by studying their sign, house, and aspects and reflect on how these lessons have shown up in your life. Notice when you're falling into South Node patterns and practice orienting towards your North Node. Most essentially, treat your Nodes as an invitation for self-compassion, courage, and growth.

How long is the cycle of the lunar nodes?

The complete cycle of the lunar nodes takes 18.6 years, with the nodes spending approximately 1.5 years in each zodiac sign as they move retrograde through the zodiac.
